Working for an Osteopath during the eighties, Judy Bell became aware of a growing number of clients with an intolerance to normal dairy products. Sheep milk products were recognised as a viable alternative for such allergy sufferers.
As sheep milk and sheep milk products were difficult to find, the company Shepherds Purse was formed in 1987 as part of a diversification scheme on the Bell's farm.
The first 12 months were spent researching milking sheep and making cheese. July 1989 saw the main product launch at the Great Yorkshire Show, under the Yorkshire Pantry banner, and the company was awarded 1st prize at the Nantwich International Cheese Show, the first of many accolades to come.
A further honour was won at Nantwich in July 1993 and a marketing trophy was awarded by Anchor Foods for a selection of cheeses which led to a contract with TESCO and after six months the company supplied three products.
Our now famous Yorkshire Blue (cow's milk) was added to the range in 1994 and was the first diversion away from sheep milk cheese. Now well established alongside the traditional blue veined cheeses, Yorkshire Blue collected a number of Gold and Silver awards shortly after its launch. In 1996 it took Champion Blue Cheese at Nantwich International Cheese Show. Its consistent quality has led to the company beating its competitors from major supermarkets and independent retailers to win in the 1999 Quality Award for our cheese
