Mrs Bell’s Salad Cheese is our bright, tangy sheep’s milk cheese that brings a fresh, vibrant character to a cheese board, a snack and everyday cooking.
Made with rich whole ewe’s milk, each cheese is carefully hand-salted and matured, allowing the salt to gently infuse the curd and develop its distinctive lemony freshness and delicate crumbly texture.
It’s a wonderfully versatile cheese. You can enjoy on a cheeseboard, crumble it over fresh salads, roast it with Mediterranean vegetables, or add it to tarts, grains and pasta dishes where its lively acidity lifts and balances richer flavours.
This cheese holds a special place in our story. Mrs Bell’s Salad Cheese was the very first cheese created by our founder, Judy Bell, in 1987, marking the beginning of Shepherds Purse and our pioneering journey into sheep’s milk cheesemaking and cheesemaking in Yorkshire overall.
Today, it remains one of our most loved cheeses, a simple, honest expression of beautiful ewe's milk, careful craft, and Yorkshire cheesemaking heritage.
What is Salad Cheese?
Salad cheese is a lightly salted, crumbly cheese traditionally used in Mediterranean cooking. It’s loved for its fresh, tangy flavour and ability to lift simple dishes.
Mrs Bell’s Salad Cheese is our Yorkshire interpretation, made with rich sheep’s milk rather than cow’s milk. The result is a cheese that is more nutirtious, creamier, brighter and more aromatic, with a clean lemony finish.
While often compared to feta-style cheeses, Mrs Bell’s Salad Cheese has its own distinctive character thanks to the quality of the ewe’s milk and the careful handcrafting process at Shepherds Purse in North Yorkshire.
