May Cheese of the Month: Mrs Bell's Blue

May Cheese of the Month: Mrs Bell's Blue

Our most decorated cheese, Mrs Bell’s Blue has been a favourite since its launch over 30 years ago

May is our favourite month here on the farm when everything is blooming and looks it’s best. In celebration of this time of year, our Cheese of the Month is our much-loved Mrs Bell’s Blue

A favourite of both Rick Stein and Raymond Blanc, Mrs Bell's Blue is handcrafted here on the farm in small batches, the same way we’ve always made it since we launched it over 30 years ago.

Launched in 1995, alongside it’s cow’s milk counterpart Yorkshire Blue, their release saw the return of blue cheese production to Yorkshire after a 30-year gap.

Complex and mild

Mrs Bell’s Blue was our first, and still our only ewe’s milk blue, and has become one of our most popular cheeses, gaining a legion of fans and a raft of prestigious industry awards to boot.

Complex and mild, it’s a cheeseboard staple for many, and a great introduction to blue cheese. Comparable to Roquefort but creamier and more mellow, with deeply savoury, umami notes.

It's also brilliant for those looking for cow’s milk alternatives and in fact, it's a vital part of our company ethos, born from Judy's passionate belief that the healthy choice for you (if you had allergies or intolerances) shouldn't mean that you have to sacrifice deliciousness and quality.

Handcrafted here on the farm by our team, Mrs Bell’s Blue is made from the finest quality English ewe's milk sourced from local flocks, and carefully hand salted before being left to mature for a minimum of 10 weeks allows the complex blue flavours to gently develop.

Since it’s launch three decades ago, Mrs Bell’s Blue has received over 80 prestigious industry awards, including a coveted (and very rare!) 3 Stars at the Great Taste awards in 2023!

Perfection on cheese boards and beautiful to cook with

More recently, last year it was awarded Gold at the Great Yorkshire Show as well as receiving The Judy Bell Trophy, (named in honour of our founder and creator of Mrs Bell’s Blue, Judy) for the Champion UK Sheep Milk Cheese at the International Cheese and Dairy Awards.

Perfection on cheese boards, and beautiful to cook with, pair with pistachios and local blossom honey or try our try our Baked Pears with Mrs Bell’s Blue & Honey for an indulgent supper you’ll want on repeat this summer.
