October Cheese of the Month: Mrs Bell's Blue
Our most decorated cheese celebrated 30 years since its launch this year.
Our most decorated cheese, Mrs Bell’s Blue, celebrates its 30th birthday this year… and what a 30 years it’s been!
Launched in 1995 alongside it’s cow’s milk counterpart Yorkshire Blue, Mrs Bell’s Blue is our first and only ewe’s milk blue and has become one of most popular cheeses, gaining a legion of fans and a raft of prestigious industry awards to boot.
Complex and mild, it’s a cheeseboard staple for many, and a great introductory blue due to it's mild and creamy flavour. It's also brilliant for those looking for cow’s milk alternatives and in fact, it's a vital part of our company ethos, born from Judy's passionate belief that the healthy choice for you (if you had allergies or intolerances) shouldn't mean that you have to sacrifice deliciousness and quality.
Creamy, complex and mild
Universally loved for its soft, blue notes and mellow, umami flavours, our skilled team of cheesemakers here on the farm carefully handcraft Mrs Bell’s Blue in small batches, using the finest quality English ewe's milk sourced from local flocks.
Hand salting and left to mature under their watchful eyes for a minimum of 10 weeks allows the complex blue flavours to gently develop – creating a cheese similar to Roquefort, but creamier and more mellow.
Since it’s launch three decades ago, Mrs Bell’s Blue has received over 75 prestigious industry awards, including a coveted (and very rare!) 3 Stars at the Great Taste awards in 2023!
More recently, this year it was awarded Gold at the Great Yorkshire Show as well as receiving The Judy Bell Trophy, (named in honour of our founder and creator of Mrs Bell’s Blue, Judy) for the Champion UK Sheep Milk Cheese at the International Cheese and Dairy Awards.
Delicious served simply on a cheese board with artisan crackers, a generous drizzle of local honey and a handful of pistachios for added crunch, it's also great for adding flavour to a whole host of dishes including this really lovely Baked Pears with Mrs Bell’s Blue & Honey recipe which you really should try.
